In today's fast-paced world, noise pollution has become an ever-present issue, affecting both residential and commercial spaces. Whether it's the constant hum of traffic, noisy neighbours or unwanted sounds from machinery, the impact on our peace of mind is undeniable. Fortunately, advances in soundproofing technology have paved the way for innovative solutions. One such material gaining ground in noise control is Elasticized Expanded Polystyrene (EEPS) or under the EN13163 standard EPS T. This material combines the advantages of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) with elastic properties, making it an ideal choice for soundproofing applications.<\/p>\n

What is laminated expanded polystyrene (<\/strong>EEPS); AND<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Elasticized Expanded Polystyrene is a modified form of expanded polystyrene (EPS). It is characterized as a lightweight closed-cell foam made from polystyrene beads. EPS is already known for its excellent thermal insulation properties, but with the introduction of elastic properties it becomes a versatile material for sound insulation as well. The modification involves enhancing the flexibility and elasticity of EPS, allowing it to better absorb and reduce its sound waves. EEPS is both durable and energy efficient, making it a viable choice for modern soundproofing solutions.<\/p>\n

The science behind soundproofing with\u00a0<\/strong>EEPS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sound insulation works by reducing the transmission of sound from one room to another. Therefore, a material must be able to absorb and dampen sound waves rather than simply reflect them. EEPS excels at this because of its structure: the cells consist of many tiny air pockets that allow sound waves to enter, where they are absorbed and converted into small amounts of heat, reducing their intensity.<\/p>\n

The elasticity of EEPS further enhances its ability to reduce sound. Unlike rigid materials that can reflect sound waves back into the room, the resilient nature of EEPS allows it to vibrate and dissipate sound energy, preventing noise reverberation. This property is quantified in MN\/m3 by the magnitude of dynamic stiffness which is measured with appropriate laboratory equipment. This makes EEPS an excellent choice for spaces where both airborne sound (such as conversations or music) and impact sound (such as footsteps or furniture movement) need to be controlled.<\/p>\n

When applied to floors where an overlay of floating reinforced cement mortar at least 4 cm thick and a perimeter expansion joint of polyethylene foam tape is required, EPS T based on its compressibility is applied in a greater thickness than the final desired thickness because with the overlying weight of the cement mortar it will be compressed as much as calculated and will be charged acting as a sound wave damper. The amount of compressibility is also quantified in mm with appropriate laboratory equipment and this is based on EN13163.<\/p>\n

The magnitude of the dynamic stiffness in combination with the mass of the overlying cement mortar gives us, based on EN12354-2, the normalized sound pressure level of impact noise, and therefore the sound reduction we achieve on the floor below, but also on the same floor in the neighbouring rooms.<\/p>\n
