Pilotis Heat Insulation

The heat insulating layer is suggested to be placed under the holder plate of armed concrete in pilotis, whether it is a new or an existing construction. In new buildings the heat insulating layer is placed from the beginning in the wooden formwork and with the infusion and hardening of concrete becomes one body with this. In existing building the heat insulation under the holder plate constitutes also the easiest solution since it allows the implementation of building work without interrupting the use. In this case insulating materials are attached to the plate with special conjunctive mortars and then mechanical fixing with plugs is also applied. The placement of heat insulating layer under the plate allows us to exploit the thermal capacity of the above compact layers (holder plate, filling and coatings of floor).

The heat insulation of pilotis is as important as that of a flat or pitched roof and the thicknesses that are required by the regulation of Energy Efficiency of Buildings are the same. The incomplete heat insulation of pilotis due to low external temperature during winter period leads to low temperatures of the floor which leads to very low “thermal comfort” because feet have lower temperature than the rest of the body. This is avoided with the use of under floor heating.

If the beams of the pillared space are not insulated in their perimeter, they will create thermal bridges with all the known consequences. For this reason it is suggested placing the heat insulating material from the beginning in the wooden formwork not only in the surface of the plates, but also in the all surfaces of beams and columns of ground floor.

In the case of heat insulation of pilotis is suggested the use of Expanded polystyrene with graphite such as ΝΕOCOAT BT EPS 150, NEOPLAK BT EPS 150 and ISOPOR EPS 150 in suitable thickness according to the regulation of Energy Efficiency of Buildings.

Alternatively it can be used composite panel of Expanded Polystyrene with graphite such as NEOPOR and water resistant plasterboard KNAUF known as BETOBOARD. If BETOBOARD of KNAUF is selected as insulating material the then it can work as the wooden formwork of the construction and then it can remain and not be detached.
